South Carolina Cruises To Another Win

The South Carolina Gamecocks cruised to another win over the Kentucky Wildcats.

Just another day at the office for Dawn Staley and the crew, defeating Kentucky in lopsided fashion, 87-69. It was a true team win for the Gamecocks, utilizing the whole team with six players scoring eight points or more in the winning effort.

However, the win over the Cats didn't come without its theatrics. The top-ranked Gamecocks were in a tight ball game early. The Lady Wildcats exploited South Carolina's perimeter defense, successfully driving to the basket and drawing fouls. The Cats won the free-throw battle Thursday night, making 96 percent from the charity stripe (25-26).

Aaliyah Boston and Kamila Cardoso led the team in scoring, combining for 28 points and 17 rebounds. Kentucky's senior guard Robyn Benton led all scorers with 24 points.

Thursday was a great dress rehearsal for the high-billing matchup this Sunday against the No. 5 UConn Huskies, but the 14th-year head coach is uneasy about traveling to the XL Center.

"It still stands true that we haven't won up there," said Staley.

Those words were understandably received as Staley lost her first seven games to UConn as South Carolina coach. Since then, the Gamecocks have won three of the four matchups since.

Staley later relayed reassurance that this year's team may end the losing streak in Connecticut.

"This particular class is committed to each other," Staley said. "When you have that type of commitment, and you just want to win, you find yourself winning some games that you haven't won before."
