Final Thoughts: South Carolina @ No. 21 Tennessee

As we approach the weekend's highly anticipated SEC matchup between South Carolina and Tennessee, there's widespread speculation about whether the Gamecocks can pull off an upset against the Vols. In analyzing the potential for this upset, three key strategies emerged:
1) Limit the Run
The first crucial strategy is to limit the run game. In the past two seasons, teams that slowed down Tennessee's offense did so primarily by restricting their run game. Florida this season provided a blueprint by holding the Vols to 100 yards on 30 carries. Similarly, last season, Georgia held them to 94 yards on 42 attempts, while Pittsburgh kept them to just 91 yards on 35 attempts in a game that went into overtime.
South Carolina can neutralize a significant portion of Tennessee's offensive strategy by focusing on run defense. The Gamecocks' defense must be disciplined and tactical to keep the Vols' ground game in check.
2) Keep Tennessee's Defense on the Field
The second strategy centers on game control and time management. An effective way to stifle an opponent is to keep their defense on the field for extended periods. This approach particularly applies to Tennessee, whose defense already spends roughly 60% of the game on the field.
The Gamecocks should aim for balanced, long-sustaining drives that end in scores and keep the Vols' offense off the field. This strategy not only racks up points for South Carolina but also gradually wears down Tennessee's defense, potentially opening up opportunities for more significant plays as the game progresses.
3) Keep Spencer Clean
Finally, the success of South Carolina's upset bid may hinge largely on the performance of quarterback Spencer Rattler. The offensive line's primary task will be to keep Spencer clean and give him the time to make the right decisions.
While the Vols' secondary has done a decent job in the passing game, they have yet to face a quarterback of Rattler's caliber this season. Given the time and protection, Rattler could exploit the Vols' secondary, potentially leading to a big day for wide receiver Xavier Legette. If South Carolina can effectively execute on these fronts, they stand a good chance of pulling off the upset this weekend.
