South Carolina Athletic Director Receives Contract Extension

South Carolina's Athletic Director Ray Tanner has received a two-year contract extension, keeping him in Columbia until June of 2026.

Big news emerged from Columbia early Friday morning when it was announced that Athletic Director Ray Tanner had received a two-year contract extension that could keep Tanner in Columbia until the Summer of 2026. Before becoming the Athletic Director at South Carolina, Tanner served as the head coach for the Gamecocks' Baseball team, winning 738 games and two College World Series titles during his 15 year stretch in South Carolina's dugout.

While Tanner's most recent notable accomplishment is viewed to be the hire of current head football coach Shane Beamer, who's made the Gamecocks a respectable force on the national stage, Tanner's crowning achievement as an athletic director has been overseeing Dawn Staley and the women's basketball team's rise to prominence. The program has become the gold standard in both the SEC and women's college basketball after winning the national championship last season and threatening to do it again.

The School Board of Trustees officially approved the deal Friday, giving Tanner a slight raise in annual compensation, as they'll now pay him $1.175 million a year. The announcement conveys a message of confidence from the University's higher-ups and Board of Trustees and touts stability in South Carolina's athletic department, something that will make the University an attractive destination for up-and-coming administrators and coaches involved with intercollegiate athletics.
