Baseball: TCU Shuts Out Abilene Christian to Remain Unbeaten

Two Horned Frogs homer in 4-0 midweek victory over the Wildcats.

In this week's edition of D1Baseball.com's top 25, there are only three undefeated teams left: No. 23 UC Irvine, No. 7 Texas A&M, and No. 5 TCU. Many of TCU's 13 wins have come thanks to a furious comeback late in the game, but rarely have the Horned Frogs won comfortably. On Tuesday night against Abilene Christian, TCU won comfortably, giving Frog fans everywhere a bit of a break.

It didn't take long for the Horned Frogs to get themselves on the scoreboard thanks to a line drive home run that was ripped off the bat of Payton Tolle in the bottom of the second inning. It was Tolle's second home run of the season, his first since the second game of the season.

Two innings later, Chase Brunson smashed a two-run shot over the left field wall, scoring himself and third baseman Jack Basseer to make it 3-0. Brunson now has three home runs on the season. It was also his first since the second game of the season against Florida Gulf Coast. The final run of the game came in the seventh inning when first baseman Brody Green hit a sacrifice fly that sent Brunson to the plate.

The 4-0 victory was the first time all season that the Horned Frogs' pitching staff kept opponent runs off the board. Redshirt freshman Caedmon Parker started on the mound and pitched two innings, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out three Wildcat batters. Jax Traeger, Chase Hoover, and Louis Rodriguez pitched the next three innings, each pitching one frame. Combined, the three allowed just two hits, walked two batters, and struck out four.

Hunter Hodges came on in the sixth inning and went for two innings. He allowed two hits, walked two batters, and struck out three. Kyle Ayers took the mound in the eighth inning and closed out the final two innings by allowing no hits, walking one batter, and striking out three.

The 13-0 Horned Frogs will open up Big 12 on Friday with a weekend series at Kansas. The Jayhawks are 7-4 on the season and will enter the game coming off an 11-7 midweek win over Texas Southern. First pitch on Friday is scheduled for 6 p.m. and will be aired on Big 12 Now on ESPN +.
