Big 12 Baseball Power Rankings: Penultimate List Still Has Mountaineers On Top

Looking at where each team sits in the Big 12 Conference.

Disclaimer: The rankings below are for the games played through Sunday, May 14. Midweek games played since Sunday will be reflected on next week’s Power Rankings.

Last week, there were three Big 12 conference series, with the other three teams playing nonconference series. There were some crazy scores on some of those games, especially the conference ones.

Oklahoma State took the series over Kansas State with 19-5 and 12-2 weekend wins. West Virginia took the series over Tech, including a 17-2 game on Saturday. TCU swept its series with Baylor, outscoring the Bears 17-6 combined over the weekend.

But how do the rest of the teams rank? Each week, during the baseball season, we bring you our Power Rankings, where we decide how the nine teams in the league stand.

We have brought together a group from across the league to vote each week during the season on the Big 12 Power Rankings. There are 21 participants in this group, which consists of the KillerFrogs editorial staff plus one or two fans from each of the other schools in the league.

Each week, each participant provides their rankings 1-9. Those rankings are compiled, and the average rank is then listed below. (For those of you counting, Iowa State does not play baseball).

In our penultimate rankings before the last weekend of the regular season, the only change we saw week-over-week was that TCU bumped up two spots, sending Kansas State and Texas Tech down one spot each.

Here’s how our panel ranks the teams this week:

National rankings listed are based on current rankings by D1Baseball. Team records are through May 14 and do not include any midweek games from this week.

Big 12 Baseball Power Rankings

9. Baylor (16-35, 6-18)

Last week #9

It’s been a tough season for the Bears. But we’ve said many times that the best thing in all of college sports is seeing Baylor Tears, so watching the Frogs sweep the Bears last weekend was nice – especially for a TCU team that had struggled earlier in the season. Baylor doesn’t even play a conference series this weekend. They are done. They will come last in the conference standings, so they won’t even play in the Big 12 tournament next week.

8. Kansas (23-28, 7-14)

Last week #8

Congrats, Jayhawks. You will end the season slightly ahead of Baylor, meaning you will be the No. 8 seed in next week’s Big 12 Tournament and most likely will face a hot West Virginia team in your first game. Have fun with that!

7. Oklahoma (29-22, 10-11)

Last week #7

The late-season surge that we saw from the Sooners last year so far has yet to come to fruition to repeat this year. But you never know. They could have another incredible run in the tournament. And if not, then at least they have softball to focus on for the next few weeks.

6. Texas Tech (35-18, 10-11)

Last week #5

The good news is that Tech hosts Kansas this weekend. The Red Raiders do very well in Lubbock, plus Kansas is not that good. So, at least they may end the season above .500 in conference play, though this is not where a team that spent a lot of time in the Top 25 this season expected to be, come May.

5. Kansas State (32-20, 12-9)

Last week #4

The Cats were eliminated last weekend from winning the conference title. But they still have a lot to play for – a seed in the top half of the Big 12 tournament bracket and most likely an NCAA berth as well. It’s been a season that exceeded expectations, just like their football and men’s basketball teams this year.

4. TCU (30-21, 11-10)

Last week #6

The Frogs got the brooms out and swept the Bears last weekend. It was enough to vault them from the bottom third into the middle of the pack – still not where the preseason conference favorite was expected to finish, but better than where it was headed. TCU takes on a challenging K-State this weekend with a lot on the line – both teams want the higher seed in the conference tournament, and both hope for an NCAA berth.

3. Texas (35-18, 12-9)

Last week #3

Did you see the crazy scores the Longhorns put up against San Jose State? They lost the first game of the doubleheader on Friday but then demolished the Spartans in the remaining two games – 24-3 and 18-6. Were they playing football and not baseball in Austin?

2. #25 Oklahoma State (35-15, 13-8)

Last week #2

Oklahoma State has clawed its way back. After dropping out of the national rankings several weeks ago, the Pokes are back in this week at No. 25 in the D1 Baseball poll. Just a month ago, they were No. 6 in our weekly Power Rankings and have climbed upward since then. They have a Bedlam series this weekend. A sweep over the Sooners plus a sweep by Texas over West Virginia and the regular-season trophy will reside in Stillwater.

1. #6 West Virginia (39-13, 15-6)

Last week #1

Oh, Country Roads, take us home! West Virginia travels to Austin this weekend for a series with the Longhorns. They will be outright regular-season conference champions if they win just one of those games. The Mountaineers also vaulted up six spots in the D1 Baseball poll this week to now be No. 6. They certainly will host a Regional and most likely be the only Big 12 school to host a Super Regional this season. What a season for Randy Mazey and squad.

Note: Power Rankings are determined by a group of fans representing most schools currently in the Big 12 Conference.
