TCU Baseball: Horned Frogs Show Out in Series Finale Against Texas

After a heartbreaking loss to the Texas Longhorns on Sunday, the Frogs bounced back with an emphatic victory, salvaging the series finale. Sam Stoutenborough got the nod Monday for TCU, who entered the game having lost eight of their last ten games. It was Stoutenborough’s first start since the Frogs faced the University of Missouri in the College Baseball Showdown at Globe Life Field in February.
Stoutenborough had a quick outing, going only 2⅓ innings, giving up two hits and two runs, both of which were recorded as unearned runs. The right-hander allowed a leadoff base runner in the top half of the first due to a fielding error. That would soon harm the Frogs with a two-run blast to left center by Longhorn catcher Garret Guillemette.
Aside from the early blow, Stoutenborough and the Frogs limited the damage to two runs, allowing the offense to get back in it. TCU answered back with a three-run, first inning that started with a one-run double by Anthony Silva. With the bases loaded, Austin Davis split the infield with a single up the middle, scoring the tying and go-ahead run for the Frogs.
TCU posted a three spot in the third inning as well. With Cole Fontenelle and Logan Maxwell reaching base, Kurtis Byrne smacked a three-run shot, extending the lead to 6-2. While the Frogs did damage, they left enough in the tank for a monstrous fourth inning.
The first eight batters of the inning reached base. After an RBI single from Davis, Byrne singled in two runs, making it 9-2. A wild pitch and a bases-loaded single made it 11-2. Finally, a sacrifice fly by Brayden Taylor and an RBI single from Silva made it 13-2. The Frogs had seven runs on seven hits, making for a nightmare inning for the Longhorns. While the Longhorns slowly clawed back, the Frogs maintained their lead and saw out a 15-6 victory.
The Frogs needed a win on Monday and they got it. There is no doubt the last two weeks have been tough for TCU. Even with Monday’s victory over Texas, the Frogs still dropped two of three at home.
Now 24-20 on the season, the Frogs sit at 8-10 in the Big 12. TCU sits 7th in the conference, just above Kansas and Baylor. Looking ahead, TCU is scheduled to host UT Rio Grande Valley on Tuesday night before a home series against Cal State Fullerton starting May 5.
