Big 12 Men’s Basketball Saturday Rundown: Houston, Iowa Sit at the Top

In this story:

For the first game day in a while, all of the teams favored to win in the Big 12 did just that on Saturday. However, several of the underdogs made their games closer than the odds projected. After Saturday's games, Houston remains at the top of the men’s basketball standings, with Iowa State just a half-game behind.

Road wins in the Big 12 are hard to come by. And Saturday’s games showed just that. Houston, the number five team in the nation and the number one team in NET Rankings, was the only road team to win. They played a close game in Cincinnati. The Bearcats actually had a 32-29 halftime lead, but Houston managed to take the lead with 3:55 remaining and never relinquished it after that. The Cougars won 67-62.

Iowa State continues to have TCU’s number. The Cyclones won their fifth straight game over the Horned Frogs and extended their winning streak at Hilton Coliseum to 14 games this season. Iowa State held TCU to a season-low 59 points. The final score was 71-59.

Texas had no problem with West Virginia, with the Longhorns winning at home 94-58. This was the largest margin of victory of any of the Big 12 games on Saturday.

Texas Tech, Kansas, Oklahoma, and BYU all won home games by single digits. The Red Raiders beat UCF 66-59. In the marquee game of the week in Lawrence, Kansas held off Baylor to squeak out a 64-61 win. The Sooners won the last Bedlam game to be played in Norman, beating Oklahoma State 66-62. And in the late-night game from Provo, BYU beat Kansas State 72-66.

The conference’s NET ranking of 46.4 is the lowest of all leagues. The next lowest are the Big Ten at 61.9 and the SEC at 68.2
