Where Is He Now?: TCU Basketball All-Time Assist Leader Alex Robinson Jr.

Alex Robinson Jr., TCU basketball's all-time assist leader, looks towards being the best coach possible following his playing career.

Alex Robinson Jr. is a name recognized by all Horned Frog fans and one of the best basketball players in TCU history.

In his time with the Frogs, Robinson Jr. racked up a TCU record 672 assists, was named 2018-19 All-Big 12 Third Team, won the 2017 NIT Championship, and made a 2018 NCAA Tournament appearance to just name a few accomplishments.

After averaging 11.2 points, 6.9 assists, and 2.9 rebounds in his time as a Horned Frog, he went on to play for seven different G League teams, including stints in the Australian Basketball League and Basketball Africa League from 2019-2023. This even included playing with the 2021 Fort Worth Funk team in The Basketball Tournament representing the Frogs.

My co-host Davis Wilson and I got the opportunity to have "A-Rob" on Episode 15 of the Frog Fever Podcast this past week, where we got to learn about his TCU journey and what he is up to currently.

Alex Robinson Jr. started his college career at Texas A&M for his freshman campaign. We asked him why he did not come to TCU at the start, considering he grew up in Fort Worth and his mother, Darla Biggs Robinson, had played for the Frogs.

"The only reason I didn't go to TCU was at the time they didn't even have a stadium. They didn't have a locker room. They didn't have anything," Robinson Jr. said. It shows how far TCU has come as a basketball program in recent years because of players like A-Rob.

He went on to discuss how the success of winning the 2017 NIT Tournament was such a big win for the program and propelled them to be a six-seed in the 2018 NCAA Tournament the following year. However, he felt they should have beaten that Syracuse team.

2017 nit championship, TCU

Alex Robinson Jr. and TCU teammates hold up the trophy for the 2017 Nit Championship.

"If we play them ten times, we probably win nine out of ten times, but that night, we just couldn't hit shots," Robinson Jr. said on the Syracuse game.

The following season, A-Rob became the TCU all-time assist leader, cementing him as a legend in Horned Frog history.

"I couldn't believe I broke it, to be honest with you," Robinson Jr. said on breaking the record. He noted that it meant a lot to be able to pass all the great players in TCU history on his way to the record, including head coach Jamie Dixon.

Alex Robinson Jr. was Desmond Bane's backcourt mate for the majority of his college career, so we asked him if he had always known Bane was an elite talent. A-Rob responded by saying how Bane had an extremely great work ethic, and it was obvious he was going to be a star.

After graduating from TCU, A-Rob bounced around seven G-League teams and even had stints with pro teams in Australia and Africa, so we asked him about his favorite part of that journey.

"I think my favorite place to play, though, was Australia. They treated me so well and helped me get back on my feet," Robinson Jr. noted.

All along, however, Alex said that his dream was to be a coach. He recently moved back to Fort Worth with his family and plans to continue coaching in the area. One organization he has begun his coaching career with is Courtside 360, an organization in Fort Worth that provides elite basketball training for the youth.

"My biggest dream was to coach, so I was always one foot in, one foot out after my rookie year," Robinson Jr. said.

A-Rob has worked with a ton of talent already, including training heavily with TCU standout guard Trey Tennyson this offseason, helping develop him into an elite player.

"My goal is to help everyone who puts on a TCU uniform," Robinson Jr. said. "I didn't just go there to play basketball. It's a family, you know. I'm a true TCU fan."

The impact Alex Robinson Jr. has had on TCU basketball is monumental in helping make Horned Frog basketball what it is today.

It was an honor getting to talk to A-Rob, and all Frog fans should be excited about what he is able to do in the next step of his career.
