TCU Football: Week Four KillerFrogs Player of the Week

TCU moved to 3-1 on Saturday with a win over cross-town rival SMU. Junior linebacker Namdi Obiazor was impressive in his team's win.

The first three KillerFrogs Player of the Week awards have all gone to offensive players. This week, after a stellar performance against the Ponies, Namdi Obiazor has earned the KillerFrogs Player of the Weed award, the first for anyone on the defense.

Obiazor recorded a team-high 11 tackles on Saturday, six solo and one for loss. Early in the first quarter, he recorded his first sack of the season, forcing a fourth down and a field goal for SMU. Obiazor also came very close to an interception, but the ball fell through his hands to the ground for a pass defense.

Last season, Obiazor played a part on TCU's defense, but not a large one. He finished the year with 49 tackles - 31 solo, 0.5 for loss - and two passes defended in 15 games. This year, his role is much more prominent, and he is showing us why. In four games, he already has more than half of his 15-game tackle total from last year with 33, and he has recorded a sack, something he did not do last year.

Since Sonny Dykes' arrival, TCU's identity has shifted from defense to offense, thanks to the likes of Max Duggan, Quentin Johnston, and the fast-paced offense we have seen over the last year. But you cannot win without defense, and after a pitiful showing in Week One's matchup with Colorado, that Horned Frog unit has stepped up, in large part due to the improved play of Obiazor.
