Tennessee Volunteers defensive back Boo Carter has been a standout in spring practices. The mid-year enrollee could play as early as this season.

Tennessee defensive back Boo Carter only joined the team in January, but he's already drawing eyes from the coaching staff and those watching spring practices. There's been a lot of positive buzz surrounding his name since the beginning of his senior season.

Carter transferred to Bradley Central High School in Cleveland, Tennessee. He starred in all three phases of the game - Carter was a standout punt returner, offensive gadget, and safety. He tallied 1,795 all-purpose yards, 27 touchdowns, 102 tackles, and two interceptions en route to being named Mr. Tennessee Football.

He could earn snaps during his true freshman season. Tennessee lost punt returner Dee Williams this offseason, and Carter is a prime candidate to return kicks. People knew that entering this offseason, but his performances have led Tennessee's coaching staff to believe he could garner defensive snaps this year. He slots well into the STAR position, a hybrid between a safety and an outside linebacker.

He's competing alongside several veteran players, and defensive backs coach Willie Martinez tends to favor the older players. However, Carter's athletic abilities are undeniable, and he could be making plays in Knoxville, Tennessee, sooner rather than later. According to the 247Sports Composite Rankings, he ranked as the No. 128 prospect in the 2024 class.
