The No. 2 Texas Longhorns will travel to Columbia, South Carolina, to face the South Carolina Gamecocks for the first time as Southeastern Conference members this weekend.

The Longhorns are cruising through their second year in the SEC, jumping out to a 7-2 conference record, with their only two losses coming against Ole Miss and Auburn in the series opener. On the contrary, the Gamecocks are struggling, with a lowly 1-8 record in conference play and the last-place spot in the conference.

Texas is coming off a close one against Texas State this past Tuesday, with a six-run inning in the sixth providing them enough cushion to pull away with a 10-8 victory at UFCU Disch-Falk Field.

South Carolina ended its four-game losing streak on Tuesday, run-ruling Wofford, 11-1, at Founder’s Park for the Gamecocks third run-rule victory of the season.

Last season: The Longhorns experienced their best season since 2010, storming to a 44-14 record in their first season in the Southeastern Conference, but were dropped in their own regional to an upstart UTSA.

The Gamecocks, one of the best college baseball programs since the turn of the century, were in the midst of a rebuild and struggled in head coach Paul Mainieri’s first year in Columbia, stumbling to a 28-29 overall record and a dismal 6-24 conference record.

Meet the Coaches

Jim Schlossnagle, Texas: Entering his second season at the helm of the storied Texas baseball program, Schlossnagle has been a head coach for over two decades, with previous stops at UNLV, TCU, and Texas A&M. Schlossnagle earned his 1000 career victory against the Baylor Bears at the Bruce Bolt Classic in Houston earlier this season.

Monte Lee, South Carolina: Following Mainieri’s midseason departure, Lee, the Gamecocks’ associate head coach, was thrust into the position to fill in the void on March 21. Lee is a longtime figure in South Carolina baseball, serving as an assistant in the early 2000s before moving on to be the head coach at Clemson and the College of Charleston, taking both programs to the NCAA tournament.

What To Know About The Gamecocks

Of the 16 members in the SEC, no program has struggled this season as South Carolina has, reaching a low point when the Gamecocks fired Paul Mainieri just four games into conference play. Once one of the most consistent programs at the turn of the century, the South Carolina program has faced a couple of challenging seasons recently, with this year being another one.

Out of the three conference series so far this year, the Gamecocks have been swept in two, and their only conference win came in the series finale against Arkansas. South Carolina has been run-ruled in two conference games this season.

The Gamecocks are led by sophomore infielder KJ Scobey at the plate, slashing .300/.864/.508 for 36 hits, 20 RBI, and four home runs heading into the series with the Longhorns. Scobey is the only player to have started in all 30 games this year for South Carolina.

On the mound, the Gamecocks are led by Sunday Starter, Amp Phillips, holding an impressive 2.68 ERA and having tossed for the most innings out of any South Carolina pitcher this season at 37 innings.
