Justin Cryer Is Texas' Answer to Its MIKE Linebacker Question

Texas Longhorns fans were obviously shocked at the sudden departure of linebacker Ty'Anthony Smith.

It was a sudden departure for Smith, who was expected to play a major role on the defense, though he wasn't expected to be a starter.

Smith's experience would've been a valuable asset after Anthony Hill was drafted, particularly with the seemingly gaping hole at MIKE linebacker, where Smith was expected to slide in at the conclusion of the 2025 season.

Head coach Steve Sarkisian wasn't thrilled about the news.

"He was dismissed. Conduct detrimental to the team and that's just what it is," Sarkisian said. "It's an unfortunate situation. I hate that. For us as a team, I hate that. He's a quality player, but I have to think about the team first."

Fortunately, Texas already has its answer at MIKE in Florida State transfer Justin Cryer.

A Massive Opportunity for Cryer

Texas' linebacker depth will be tested, but the transfer portal acquisitions will soften the blow. Cryer's numbers at Florida State don't pop off the page. He recorded 43 total tackles and one sack last season. But the character traits are impressive.

At FSU, Cryer was named to the 2023 All-ACC Academic Team and earned the Bill McGrotha Award for his community service and the Bobby Bowden Leadership Award. It's clear his best qualities shine on and off the field. That's the kind of player who builds a winning culture.

But Cryer was the favorite over Smith for a starting job before his dismissal. The coaching staff noticed his efforts.

"I love Justin Cryer," Sarkisian said during fall camp. "I mean, this guy is a pro's pro. He's smart. He's physical. I think he's done a great job of changing his body since he's come to our program. He's really leaned his body up. He's playing fast. He's been a great addition."

Cryer was waiting for his turn, and he'll get an early-season chance to prove himself. He'll be lined up with Pitt transfer Rasheem Biles, who could be one of the premier linebackers in college football. Not to mention, guys like Brad Spence and Tyler Atkinson will be valuable depth pieces for defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

Smith's sudden dismissal wasn't great news out of fall camp. However, Cryer has more than enough talent and knowledge of the defensive scheme to thrive in the role.

Cryer may not be a name Longhorns fans are familiar with yet. But he's more than ready for this kind of role.
