As the UCLA Bruins gear up for the upcoming season, a fresh roster with new faces and budding talents is taking center stage. The departure of star running back Zach Charbonnet for the NFL left a significant void in the backfield. Yet, the Bruins aren't panicking, for they have a duo set to step up.

With sophomore TJ Harden and junior transfer Carson Steel, the Bruins are in the perfect position to pick up where they left off regarding the running back position. Fall camp has showcased their emergence, turning heads and igniting excitement. With a powerful offensive line in place, they're positioned to thrive.

Although they have a solid offensive line to guide them, once they break through the line don't think they'll be easy to take down. Over the offseason, Harden and Steele have been getting bigger and stronger, which aligns perfectly with head coach Chip Kelly and the staff's vision.

“We have depth right now,” coach Chip Kelly said. “That doesn’t mean after the Coastal Carolina game we’ll have depth, but I think we have some guys there and we’re bigger. And we consciously wanted to get bigger at the running back spot.”

Through almost two weeks of practice, Harden says he's already seen significant differences in his game.

“Last year I had a little bit more fat on me and I have more muscle now,” he said. “Honestly I feel lighter, which is crazy. I feel faster.”

UCLA's knack for turning transfer running backs into powerhouses is well-documented. Steele's decision to join the Bruins from Ball State echoes this trend. Under the guidance of Coach Kelly and running backs coach DeShaun Foster, Steele's learning curve has been enriching.

“You can see how much credibility there is with coach Kelly’s offense,” Steele said. “Especially with coach Foster, watching him being able to develop somebody into a next-level type running back.”

With new talents like Steele and Harden stepping up, the Bruins are embracing change and growth. As the season unfolds, eyes will be on these running backs as they prepare to fill big shoes and carve their own legacy on the field.
