UCLA Football News: Bruins Insider Labels Season as Chip Kelly's Worst Coaching Performance

In this story:
When Chip Kelly was hired to be the head coach at UCLA, it was met with all sorts of optimism. Many believed he would be the person to take this program to the next level, but it hasn't gone that way through the first few years.
He has seen success, but the Bruins have never been a top team. And they haven't won a Pac-12 title either. Now, this year, the Bruins do have a very talented team but are still falling flat on some levels.
One writer has some major criticism for Kelly and believes he holds a big part of the blame for the struggles UCLA has seen this season.
“Kelly might be having his worst coaching season since his arrival in Westwood. His lack of accounting for a spotty offensive line in the Utah game by utilizing rollouts and quick passes for a quarterback playing in his first Pac-12 game against an attacking defense was stunning.”
Per Ben Bolch of The LA Times
People have been critical of Kelly over the years, but with a solid team this year, we are seeing some things be magnified. Kelly is a good coach but sometimes gets into his own head about things, which has cost him.
I wouldn't go as far as to say that it's his worst coaching season since joining UCLA, but some questionable decisions have been made this season.
He isn't the sole blame for the loss to Oregon State, but he does get some part of it. The team should have set up the run a little better to start the game but instead tried to get freshman quarterback Dante Moore comfortable in the flow of the game.
“On Saturday, the issue was not running enough early in the game against a defense that had given up 241 yards on the ground to California. Kelly called for nine passing plays versus five runs in the first quarter against Oregon State. Two of quarterback Dante Moore’s passes were intercepted, and the Beavers mounted a 13-0 lead, which was essentially the difference in a 12-point victory.”
Per Ben Bolch of The LA Times
I don't hate the idea of trying to get Moore into an early rhythm, but after the first pass was intercepted, the game plan needed to change a little bit. But Kelly was determined to stick with the plan, and it came back to bite him and the Bruins.
The entire team will need to pick things up this week against Stanford if they want to come away with the win. Kelly can't be so stubborn in the game plan, and he needs to learn a little more about feeling things out in the game to adjust on the fly.
