UCLA PG Tyger Campbell Makes Updated Bob Cousy Award Watch List
One of the Bruins' most experienced veterans has picked up some national recognition.
UCLA men's basketball senior Tyger Campbell was one of 10 players named to the revised Bob Cousy Award Watch List on Monday. The award is given to the nation's top point guard, and Campbell is on the late season watch list for the second year in a row.
Campbell was a top-five finalist for the Cousy Award in 2022. The 2023 finalists will be revealed in March.
Joining Campbell on the watch list this time around are Oral Roberts' Max Abmas, Xavier's Souley Boum, St. Louis' Yuri Collins, Detroit Mercy's Antoine Davis, Memphis' Kendric Davis, TCU's Mike Miles, Kansas State's Markquis Nowell and Penn State's Jalen Pickett.
Campbell is the only Pac-12 player currently in contention for the honor. The ACC and SEC do not have any representatives, while the other four high major conferences have one contender apiece.
The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native is leading UCLA with 4.9 assists per game, and he ranks second with 13.2 points per game. Campbell has started in all 23 games for the Bruins, leading them to a 19-4 record while shooting 41.5% from 2, 34.7% from 3 and 82.7% from the free throw line. Since Dec. 21, Campbell is shooting 37.5% from beyond the arc on 4.4 attempts per game.
Campbell ranks No. 2 in the Pac-12 in assist-to-turnover ratio and No. 4 in assists per game.
With his usage rate climbing to 25.0%, Campbell is on pace for career-highs in points, field goal attempts and 3-point attempts. Campbell has also taken strides as a defender, setting new career-highs in steal percentage and defensive rating.
Campbell is in his fourth year as UCLA's starting point guard, and he now has the 15th-most assists in Pac-12 history. At his current pace, Campbell will be challenging Tyus Edney for the No. 10 spot in the conference and No. 2 in UCLA history depending on how long they last in March Madness.
The updated Jerry West, Julius Erving, Karl Malone and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Award watch lists will be announced throughout the rest of this week. The Men's Starting Five winners will be revealed on a date to be determined, likely in early April.
