How Newcomer Derek McDonald Fits in UNC's Defense

The former Syracuse linebacker expects to be a major part of the Tar Heels' rebuilt defense.

We are less than three weeks away from the start of the North Carolina Tar Heels' 2026 season, and over the last several months, we have seen the roster take shape via the transfer portal and recruiting class.

An addition who needs to make an immediate impact is linebacker Derek McDonald. During his press conference availability last week, the Syracuse transfer discussed multiple topics, including his experience in the ACC and building chemistry with his teammates.

• “I’ve played a decent amount of football, so being in the ACC for the past few years, I think I have some experience and stuff that I try to pass down to some of the guys, especially the young guys who haven’t played as much,” McDonald said. “But I still have to go out there and work every day, just like everyone else to get better.”

• “It’s translated very quickly,” McDonald said of the chemistry he has established with Peyton Seelmann. “We do a lot of work on communication, making checks and stuff like that. And I mean, we both love football, so we love talking about it, and we go home and watch film together, so it’s working very well.”

Assessing McDonald's Fit

It goes without saying that the former Syracuse linebacker will be a pivotal piece on North Carolina's defense. The Tar Heels suffered multiple departures across the defense, including Khmori House, who led the team in tackles last season. North Carolina added McDonald and Seelmann to replenish those losses in the heart of the defense.

McDonald's extensive experience will be monumental for this defense, especially alongside Seelmann, who is also entering a new situation from Richmond. I have highlighted throughout the offseason that North Carolina's defense will be the driving force for this team's success in 2026. If this unit falters, it could derail everything for this team, fair or not.

The Tar Heels' offense will be a work in progress, especially in the early portion of the season. During that time, the Tar Heels' defensive unit must progress quickly. As a linebacker, McDonald's presence is crucial, with his ability to communicate and command the defense being a key factor. McDonald is one of the veteran reinforcements infused into the program this offseason, with the idea that he can elevate the players around him.

North Carolina invested heavily in known and established commodities because the team needs to win early and often if head coach Bill Belichick wants a fighting chance to retain his job in 2027.
