Live updates: Wisconsin Badgers football beat Nebraska 15-14

The Wisconsin Badgers enter Saturday's matchup against Nebraska as double-digit favorites in Lincoln. 

Hoping to maintain their stranglehold on the Freedom Trophy, the Badgers will need to bounce back quickly from a loss to Iowa a week ago.

With kickoff time set for 11 a.m. CST and the game aired on ESPN, All Badgers has you covered with a rolling thread of game updates as they happen. 

Pregame Status Updates

  • Wisconsin's preliminary depth chart for this week
  • Wisconsin will be without the following players against Nebraska due to injury: Kicker Vito Calvaruso (right leg), OLB Aaron Witt (right leg), DE Isaiah Mullens (right leg), and Trey Wedig (left arm).
  • The Wisconsin players who are out for the entire 2022 season: safety Travian Blaylock (right knee), DE Mike Jarvis (left leg), ILB Luna Larson (right leg), DE Isaac Townsend (left leg), TE Cam Large (right leg), TE Clay Cundiff (left leg), CB Al Ashford. 
  • With starting right guard Trey Wedig unavailable with an arm injury, Michael Furtney will earn the starting nod in his place.
  • The following true freshman made the trip as part of the travel roster: ILB Aidan Vaughan, NT Curt Neal, OL Joe Brunner, QB Myles Burkett, WR Vinny Anthony, S Austin Brown, QB Marshall Howe, K Gavin Lahm, WR Chris Brooks Jr., S Charlie Jarvis. 
  • The Badgers will wear a special "DC" sticker on their helmets today in loving memory of former teammate Devin Chandler who was one of three people killed at the University of Virginia earlier in the week. 
  • In terms of uniforms, Wisconsin will wear all-white uniforms and pants against the Cornhuskers. Nebraska is wearing red jerseys with white pants. 

First quarter

Wisconsin wins the opening coin toss and opts to defer to the second half. Nebraska will receive the ball to start the game. 

  • 13:58 - Nebraska quarterback Casey Thompson scrambles for a 14-yard gain up the middle to give the Cornhuskers a first down. 
  • 12:57 - A throw from Thompson to Oliver Martin comes up short of the line to gain near midfield. Nebraska is forced to punt the ball after a delay of game penalty. Wisconsin taking over at the 30-yard line. 
  • 11:34 - After a six-yard run by Braelon Allen, back-to-back passes net only two yards for the Badgers, bringing up a Wisconsin punt. 
  • 9:53 - On third and three for Nebraska, nose tackle Keeanu Benton shoots a gap and gets to Casey Thompson for a sack to end the drive and give the ball back to the Badgers' offense. 
  • 7:50 - Four-straight runs by Braelon Allen give Wisconsin a pair of first downs to reach midfield. 
  • 5:30 - Back from injury, Chez Mellusi picks up another first down for the Badgers with consecutive runs in place of Allen. 
  • 3:54 - A tunnel screen by Wisconsin is unsuccessful on third down with an intentional grounding penalty, leading to a punt for the Badgers in Nebraska territory.  
  • 3:24 - Nebraska running back Anthony Grant records an 11-yard run to give the Cornhuskers a first down after beginning the drive at their own 10-yard line.
  • 1:49 - Nebraska wide receiver Marcus Washington picks up another first down on an 11-yard reception. Wisconsin cornerback Justin Clark hurt on the play. 
  • 0:30 - Wisconsin linebacker Maema Njongmeta gets home for a sack on quarterback Casey Thompson on second down. Thompson then runs for 13 yards to bring up fourth and two.

Second quarter

  • 14:50 - Nebraska punts the ball back to Wisconsin, with Dean Engram fair catching the ball at the 11-yard line. 
  • 13:36 - After a 9-yard run by Braelon Allen, he comes off the field favoring his shoulder. 
  • 12:11 - Graham Mertz completes a play-action throw to tight end, Jack Eschenbach, for a second-straight first down. 
  • 10:36 - While scrambling out of the pocket, Graham Mertz underthrows a wide receiver downfield and it is intercepted by Malcolm Hartzog after a poor decision and throw. 
  • 7:54 - Starting with tremendous field position, Nebraska converts a pair of first downs on throws from Casey Thompson to make it first and goal. 
  • 6:40 - Thompson then finds Trey Palmer for an 11-yard touchdown to give Nebraska an early lead in Lincoln. 

7-0 Nebraska

  • 4:45 - Wisconsin goes back to the run game, and generates consecutive first downs on the ground with Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi leading the way. 
  • 2:24 - The Badgers move deeper into Nebraska territory with Isaac Guerendo and Chez Mellusi picking up a pair of first downs shortly thereafter. 
  • 1:00 - Graham Mertz finds Jack Eschenbach on play-action to convert on third down. 
  • 0:19 - After three straight incompletions, the Badgers are forced to settle for a 39-yard field goal attempt. The kick is missed short by Nate Van Zelst. 

7-0 Nebraska

Third quarter

  • 13:33 - After receiving the ball to start the second half, the Wisconsin Badgers go three-and-out on offense. Andy Vujnovich delivers a 43-yard punt to give Nebraska the ball back at the 26-yard line. 
  • 12:35 - Wisconsin cornerback Cedrick Dort Jr. tips a pass on third and 10 to bring out the Nebraska punt team. 
  • 11:08 - First down runs by Chez Mellusi and Skyler Bell for Wisconsin lead the Badgers over the 50-yard line. 
  • 10:12 - Graham Mertz throws a 20-yard completion to Keontez Lewis. 
  • 7:08 - After several runs by Chez Mellusi, Isaac Guerendo runs up the middle for a five-yard gain to give Wisconsin first and goal from the five-yard line. 
  • 5:24 - Fullback Jackson Acker is called for a false start penalty, backing the Wisconsin offense up.
  • 4:56 - Following a dropped touchdown by Chimere Dike, the Badgers convert a 25-yard field goal by Nate Van Zelst. 

7-3 Nebraska

  • 3:50 - Wisconsin outside linebacker Nick Herbig is ejected from the game for a 15-yard targeting penalty. 
  • 2:19 - The Badgers are called for roughing the passer, giving Nebraska another crucial first down and moving the ball into the red zone. 
  • 0:34 - Casey Thompson finds Trey Palmer for a 19-yard touchdown to add on to the Nebraska lead. 

14-3 Nebraska

Fourth quarter

  • 14:53 - Braelon Allen with an 8-yard run to give the Badgers a first down. 
  • 11:54 - After a Graham Mertz first down run, Braelon Allen breaks off a 22-yard run to the outside to move Wisconsin into scoring position on offense. 
  • 10:07 - Graham Mertz finds Skyler Bell in the back of the end zone for a 10-yard touchdown. The Badgers are unable to convert the two-point conversion after Nick Herbig is called for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty for celebrating on the field with his helmet off. 

14-9 Nebraska

  • 8:15 - Wisconsin outside linebacker Darryl Peterson sacks Casey Thompson to bring up third and 18 for the Nebraska offense. 
  • 6:44 - After a short gain for the Cornhuskers, the Badgers get the ball back on offense with good field position after a 34-yard punt by Nebraska. 
  • 5:44 - Braelon Allen loses four yards and hobbles off the field with an injury. The loss brings up a third and 13 for Wisconsin. 
  • 5:06 - Wisconsin wide receiver Keontez Lewis makes a tremendous catch on the sidelines, but the catch is ruled out of bounds on a review. As a result, the Badgers have to punt the ball back to Nebraska. 
  • 3:21 - Nebraska goes three-and-out deep in their own territory. With the Cornhuskers punting into the wind, Wisconsin gets the ball back at midfield. 
  • 2:31 - Isaac Guerendo finds some daylight for a first down run. 
  • 1:04 - Graham Mertz finds Isaac Guerendo wide-open down the field for a diving 27-yard reception to move the Badgers down to the nine-yard line with just over a minute remaining. 
  • 0:45 - Chez Mellusi gains five yards on an outside run to bring up third down. 
  • 0:35 - Graham Mertz finds the end zone on a quarterback sneak to give the Badgers their first lead of the game with seconds remaining. 

15-14 Wisconsin

  • 0:14 - Keeanu Benton sacks Casey Thompson with seconds remaining.
  • 0:00 - Wisconsin forces an incompletion to win the game by 1-point.
