Teofimo Lopez Signs Multi-Fight DAZN Deal, Looks to Future After Romero Fight

Teofimo Lopez signed with DAZN. On the heels of his upcoming fight with Rolly Romero, Lopez already charted his future.

Unlike many individual sports, boxing allows fighters to control their brand, potentially carving out their own niche within the sport.

With much of his attention centered on his opponent, Rolly Romero, ahead of their upcoming fight, Teofimo Lopez was also making moves under the cloak of darkness, as it were.

In less than two weeks, Lopez will stand in the center of the ring, looking across from Romero, the current WBA welterweight champion. Roughly seven months ago, Lopez lost his WBO light welterweight title to Shakur Stevenson.

While he looks to get back on track and the fight remains his main focus, the 29-year-old is looking beyond it as well.

Lopez strikes multi-fight deal with DAZN

On Tuesday, Lopez announced a $20 million multi-fight deal with DAZN. Once upon a time, Lopez was an emerging talent. Now, he is a former champion who will have a strong hand in promoting his career. With the DAZN partnership, not only can Lopez deal with his own matters, but he can open doors for young fighters as well.

With DAZN linking up with Lopez, the fighter will not need to be tethered to just one promotion, as DAZN has working agreements with PBC, Matchroom, Golden Boy, and Queensberry. In essence, he'll have access to fights and fighters around the globe.

The adage that "iron sharpens iron" rings true when it pertains to boxing in regard to training. Lopez has had the opportunity to train with Floyd Mayweather Jr., who opened his eyes and provided insight.

"Work ethic and believing in yourself were the takeaways. You’ve got to put a lot of faith and belief in yourself. The first thing you’ve got to do is look in the mirror and talk great to yourself. Your biggest challenge is you in the mirror. He tells me every time. It’s a mentorship, and I respect him.”

The biggest moment of his career?

The Romero fight could be a defining moment in Lopez's career. Alongside his new DAZN deal, a victory grants him the title and bargaining power. One option could be a rematch with Stevenson or fights with Devin Haney or even Gervonta Davis. Yet, with a future that is dependent on a victory, everything remains in front of him.

Teofimo Lopez vs Rolly Romero will take place on August 22 at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. The fight will be broadcast live on DAZN.
