The next generation of pro football is here as the 2023 NFL Draft takes place in Kansas City, home of the reigning Super Bowl champion Chiefs and with the Lombardi Trophy in attendance, and the best players college football has to offer hearing their names called and watching their dreams come true as they embark on their NFL careers.

Once again, the SEC and Big Ten were well-represented, with both conferences sharing the lead with nine players each being taken in the first round. Six players drafted hailed from the Big 12, four from the ACC, and three from the Pac-12.

In total, eight edge rushers were selected, representing the league's emphasis on getting to the quarterback, while protecting the QB is also a prime motivation in the modern game, with five offensive tackles being taken this year.

Alabama, Ohio State, and Georgia are the big three, with all having three players taken, while Clemson and Iowa came in second with two players drafted each.

Notably, we didn't hear a wide receiver get called until late in the first round proceedings, not until the No. 20 overall selection, but that kicked off a run of four straight players at the position going, including stars from College Football Playoff teams Ohio State and TCU and from USC.

1. Panthers: Bryce Young

2. Texans: C.J. Stroud

Where he plays: Quarterback

School: Ohio State

3. Texans: Will Anderson, Jr.

via trade with Cardinals

Where he plays: Edge

School: Alabama

NFL Draft scouting report: "One of the most twitchy and fastest pass-rushers that we’ve seen come off the edge in quite some time. His ability to convert speed to power, along with his bend and athleticism, enables him to use an array of moves to get to the quarterback."

4. Colts: Anthony Richardson

Where he plays: Quarterback

School: Florida

NFL Draft scouting report: "Brawny frame from head to toe. Resembles an off-ball linebacker with mass throughout the upper body and posterior chain. Sizable height and length for the position, with an intimidating structure. Overly poised for a player with such little experience. Very comfortable in the pocket and has the instinct to step up when it collapses, or escape the impending rush."

5. Seahawks: Devon Witherspoon

Where he plays: Defensive back

School: Illinois

NFL Draft scouting report: "Witherspoon plays on both the boundary and field sides of the defense for Illinois. The dynamic cornerback takes snaps covering X, Y, and Z receivers from a combination of press coverage and off-man."

6. Cardinals: Paris Johnson, Jr.

via trade with Lions

Where he plays: Offensive tackle

School: Ohio State

NFL Draft scouting report: "If his technique is sound, the Ohio State standout is typically hard to beat. He also rapidly developed his understanding of stunts and delayed blitzers. What’s more, Johnson is an excellent athlete who boasts high-level movement skills and power. His ability to pull and seal, lead block, climb, reach, and get to space indicates he can be used liberally."

7. Raiders: Tyree Wilson

Where he plays: Edge

School: Texas Tech

NFL Draft scouting report: "Wilson is one of the most physically gifted prospects in the 2023 NFL Draft, possessing the arm length, frame, explosiveness, and power to be an immediate impact player at the next level."

8. Falcons: Bijan Robinson

Where he plays: Running back

School: Texas

NFL Draft scouting report: "While he is a raw pass protector and must refine his open-field vision to better work to space, Bijan Robinson is an elite running back prospect without any athletic limitations. His size, agility, lateral and linear burst, balance, power, and well-rounded pass-catching are all special."

9. Eagles: Jalen Carter

via trade with Bears

Where he plays: Defensive tackle

School: Georgia

NFL Draft scouting report: "Blessed with rare athleticism, a lightning quick first step and violent hands, the Bulldogs defensive tackle makes a living in the opponents' backfield. In fact, he has registered a whopping 47 quarterback pressures and six sacks over the past two seasons, more than any other player in Athens."

10. Bears: Darnell Wright

Where he plays: Offensive tackle

School: Tennessee

NFL Draft scouting report: "Colossal size, long arms, and thick lower half. Able to move on pin and pull schemes and GT Counter plays. Like his ability to get to his target on the second level. Yet to see his anchor threatened. Can redirect his punch when faced with counter moves."

11. Titans: Peter Skoronski

Where he plays: Offensive tackle

School: Northwestern

NFL Draft scouting report: "Possesses exceptional athleticism, great passion and high character. His quick feet and fundamentally sound technique are two of his more favorable attributes. In addition, he demonstrates high football intelligence and takes all the correct angles to setup his blocks.

12. Lions: Jahmyr Gibbs

Where he plays: Running back

School: Alabama

NFL Draft scouting report: "Fluid body with ample mass for the position. Occupies athleticism scarcely seen. Plus ability in quickness, balance, acceleration, agility, and speed. Seldom if ever taken down by the first defender. Plays chess with tacklers, leaving them guessing his skill move."

13. Packers: Lukas Van Ness

Where he plays: Defensive end

School: Iowa

NFL Draft scouting report: "Van Ness displays exceptional ankle flexibility and lower body looseness for his size, which translates to above-average agility. He fires off the line with a quick, low, explosive drive that helps him win the initial leverage battle. Van Ness loads power with his compressed lower body before exploding into the lineman."

14. Steelers: Broderick Jones

via trade with Patriots

Where he plays: Offensive tackle

School: Georgia

NFL Draft scouting report: "On film, Jones is an easy mover. He has a smooth kick slide and possesses quick feet to mirror pass rushers. Jones’ nimble feet and quickness allow him to stay in front of pass rushers. When Jones plays with good pad level in pass protection, rushers struggle to win the outside track against him."

15. Jets: Will McDonald

Where he plays: Defensive end

School: Iowa State

NFL Draft scouting report: "Long, flowing physique. Plays as a 4-5 technique mainly in a three-point stance. Significant bend at the junction point. Ankle and hip flexibility to flatten his rush path. Useful hands that can swipe and work through linemen grasps, forcing them to recover."

16. Commanders: Emmanuel Forbes

Where he plays: Cornerback

School: Mississippi State

NFL Draft scouting report: "A lock-down cornerback, Forbes has made many opposing quarterbacks pay with his deceptive style of play. He possesses elite ball skills, as evident by his eight career interceptions. Forbes transforms into a playmaker with the ball in his hands."

17. Patriots: Christian Gonzalez

Where he plays: Cornerback

School: Oregon

NFL Draft scouting report: "Terrific length and subtle weight that doesn't burden his athleticism. Tons of press-bail alignments, typically to the boundary. He has blitzed from the field and has an impact on the pass. Plays the ball in the air for back-shoulder pass breakups."

18. Lions: Jack Campbell

Where he plays: Linebacker

School: Iowa

NFL Draft scouting report: "Extended frame with stretched-out limbs. Turns this into an advantage, scoping out the offense and attacking accordingly. Expert tackler who employs precision striking and consistent fundamentals. Capable of dropping his weight and launching to win the leverage game vs ball carriers."

19. Buccaneers: Calijah Kancey

Where he plays: Defensive tackle

School: Pittsburgh

NFL Draft scouting report: "A gifted and technically advanced athlete, Calijah Kancey has a chance to become a high-level starter and one of the league’s better interior pass rushers."

20. Seahawks: Jaxon Smith-Njigba

Where he plays: Wide receiver

School: Ohio State

NFL Draft scouting report: "Smith-Njigba showed excellent agility and route running to go with above-average lateral burst and work after the catch. While his overall speed, play strength, and hands do not move the needle, Ohio State’s top receiver is a high-floor player who can start early in the NFL."

21. Chargers: Quentin Johnston

Where he plays: Wide receiver

School: TCU

NFL Draft scouting report: "A tall, long, strong, explosive, and fast pass-catcher, Quentin Johnston is an exciting deep and jump-ball threat who wins with physicality after the catch. Though he has struggled with injuries and his athletic profile does not lend itself to high-level or diverse route running, the TCU receiver is an immediate low-level starter with elite upside."

22. Ravens: Zay Flowers

Where he plays: Wide receiver

School: Boston College

NFL Draft scouting report: "An undersized but twitchy athlete that creates separation up and down the route tree with his movement skills."

23. Vikings: Jordan Addison

Where he plays: Wide receiver

School: USC

NFL Draft scouting report: "An extremely productive receiver, the 2021 Biletnikoff Award winner can start early in the NFL thanks to his refined route running, great hands, and impressive movement skills; that said, his size, play strength, and good-not-great speed will limit him at the next level. Jordan Addison projects as a starter at Z or from the slot early in his career. He can be a top option with further development."

24. Giants: Deonte Banks

via trade with Jaguars

Where he plays: Cornerback

School: Maryland

NFL Draft scouting report: "He’s a well-built corner with good but not elite arm length. Banks has the mass and play strength to contribute as a run defender. He challenges wide receiver blocks with aggressive hands and fights through them to the ball carrier."

25. Bills: Dalton Kincaid

via trade with Jaguars

Where he plays: Tight end

School: Utah

NFL Draft scouting report: "Kincaid lacks elite agility, burst, play strength, and speed, but his reliable hands, ball skills, savvy route running, improving blocking, and nonexistent fear of contact make him an attractive high-floor player who should hear his name called on the second day of the draft."

26. Cowboys: Mazi Smith

Where he plays: Defensive tackle

School: Michigan

NFL Draft scouting report: "Smith is a freakishly athletic and powerful interior defensive lineman capable of wrecking running games and providing interior pressure. Still, he needs to play with better leverage and show development in his pass-rush plan."

27. Jaguars: Anton Harrison

Where he plays: Offensive tackle

School: Oklahoma

NFL Draft scouting report: "A smooth mover with light feet and a fluid lower half. He has a smooth kick slide with good knee bend, and his base remains stout and wide throughout reps in pass protection. Harrison plays under control with ideal balance. He has the athleticism to mirror rushers in pass protection and hit his landmarks with ease.

28. Bengals: Myles Murphy

Where he plays: Defensive end

School: Clemson

NFL Draft scouting report: "An experienced, versatile defensive lineman who is capable of playing any position with his hand in the dirt up front; possesses a quick first step, with excellent bend and athleticism."

29. Saints: Bryan Bresee

Where he plays: Defensive tackle

School: Clemson

NFL Draft scouting report: "A defensive lineman who boasts experience on the biggest stages and exhibits impressive unidirectional movement skills, power, and length, Bryan Bresee can be an elite defender if he grows more consistent with his technique."

30. Eagles: Nolan Smith

Where he plays: Linebacker

School: Georgia

NFL Draft scouting report: "Smith does a great job to set the edge and uses his length to stack and shed, often closing a rushing lane plus making the tackle for a stuff. He shows great understanding and execution of run defense assignments and excels on scrape exchanges, where his explosive first step and fluid hips allow Smith to contort his body and knife through a gap to penetrate."

31. Chiefs: Felix Anudike-Uzomah

Where he plays: Defensive end

School: Kansas State

NFL Draft scouting report: "A productive and refined pass rusher, Felix Anudike-Uzomah can see the field early on passing downs thanks to his advanced hand usage, excellent understanding of leverage, and well-rounded athletic profile; that said, the Kansas State rusher has inconsistent power and will be a liability in run defense early."
