Multiple Opening Day Games Rescheduled Because of Inclement Weather

Because of inclement weather coming to the East Coast on Thursday, the Opening Day games between the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, as well as the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets, have been postponed and rescheduled to Friday.

Because of inclement weather scheduled to hit the East Coast on Thursday, Opening Day games between the Philadelphia Phillies and Atlanta Braves, as well as the Milwaukee Brewers and New York Mets, have been postponed and rescheduled for Friday.

The Brewers put out a notice on social media with the change:

"Opening Day postponed. Due to tomorrow's weather forecast in New York, our season opener has been postponed to Friday, March 29. First pitch is slated for 1:40 p.m. CT."

The Phillies made a similar announcement about their game:

"Phillies Opening Day presented by Nemours Children's Health versus the Atlanta Braves has been postponed and rescheduled for Friday, March 29 at 3:05 p.m. All gates will open at 12:35 p.m."

Teams that play in notorious bad weather locations will almost always schedule an off-day for after Opening Day in the case of bad weather, so this is already essentially built into the schedule as a possibility. Given the pomp and circumstance around Opening Day, teams have no problem postponing games 24 hours in advance, whereas that almost never happens during the traditional season.

As for the matchups themselves: The Braves and Phillies both made the playoffs a season ago and each of them has advanced to a World Series in the last three years, with the Braves winning it in 2021. Philadelphia eliminated Atlanta in the NLDS a season ago.

The Brewers won the National League Central crown last year but figure to regress this season given the departure of multiple key pitchers and manager Craig Counsell.
