San Francisco Giants Falling Victim to Worst Road Stretch in Over 100 Years

A road loss to the Los Angeles Dodgers on Thursday knocked the San Francisco Giants below .500, putting them in historically bad company.

As a playoff spot continues to slip out of the San Francisco Giants' grasp, the team's recent road failures have reached historic proportions.

The Giants fell to the Los Angeles Dodgers 7-2 at Dodger Stadium on Thursday night, dropping to 76-77 on the season in the process. This marks the first time San Francisco has been below .500 since June 5.

The loss also marked the Giants' 26th defeat in their last 31 road games. According to NBC Sports Bay Area's Alex Pavlovic, that is the club's worst road stretch since 1902.

After opening the year 28-19 on the road, San Francisco is now 33-45 away from Oracle Park.

The Giants were 70-64 entering September, which had them standing alone as the third NL Wild Card team with a 1.0-game cushion over the next closest contender.

Since then, though, San Francisco is an NL-worst 6-13. They are 3.0 games back of the third and final NL Wild Card spot with nine games left in the season.

In the last seven days alone, the Giants are a mere 1-6. All of those games have come on the road, and they still have to close out the ongoing four-game series at the Dodgers.

San Francisco gets to end the regular season on a six-game homestand, but FanGraphs only gives the team a 0.9% chance of making the playoffs. Back on Aug. 31, that figure was standing at 67.1%.

The Giants continue their road series against the Dodgers on Friday night, with first pitch for game two scheduled for 10:10 p.m. ET. The game will be broadcast on Apple TV+.
