Veteran Pitcher Becomes Free Agent After Short Stint with New York Mets

After making one start for the New York Mets and then being DFA'd, veteran pitcher Julio Teheran has elected free agency.

Veteran pitcher Julio Teheran has elected free agency after making one start with the team.

Per Anthony DiComo of MLB.com:

News: the Mets outrighted Julio Teheran to Triple-A. He had the right to refuse that assignment, and he did.

Teheran is now a free agent.

The 33-year-old pitched against the Braves this week, allowing four earned runs over 2.2 innings. He'll head back to the market and look for another opportunity.

It's been an interesting career arc for Teheran, who has pitched in parts of 13 major league seasons with the Atlanta Braves, Detroit Tigers, Los Angeles Angels, Mets and Milwaukee Brewers. He debuted at the age of 20 and became a double-digit winner with the Braves by 22. He has five career 10+-win seasons under his belt and made the All-Star Game in 2014 and 2016. However, he has made just 26 appearances since the 2020 season and didn't pitch at all in 2022.

Because of his age, he's still likely to get an opportunity but he may be reduced to fill-in work when there is an injury. He's likely no longer a long-term option for a team unless he strikes lightning in a bottle.

The Mets are hoping to get back Kodai Senga in the next month or so, so they are hoping to get healthier themselves.

Lifetime, Teheran is 81-82 with a 3.85 ERA. He's won a career-high 14 games twice (2013 and 2014).

The Mets are currently 5-7 and in third place in the National League East.
