The Miami Marlins lost on Monday night to the New York Mets 2-1, but before the game, they got some good news on the health of reigning National League Cy Young winner Sandy Alcantara.

Per Daniel Alvarez-Montes, who covers baseball in Miami:

Sandy Alcántara threw his second bullpen session and is continuing his throwing program. “I’m happy, excited to be back soon”, he said.

Alvarez-Montes adds that Alcantara threw 20 pitches and threw all of his pitches - including breaking balls.

This is certainly good news for Alcantara and the Marlins. When he was placed on the injured list with a sprained UCL, there was worry about serious elbow issues, but thus far, those appear to have been avoided.

The Marlins are now 78-73 and trail in the race for the final wild card spot in the National League by 0.5 games. If they are going to make a run at the playoffs, or make a run in the playoffs, Alcantara will need to be a part of it.

The 28-year-old righty is 7-12 this year with a 4.14 ERA but despite his inability to repeat last year's Cy Young success, he's still the leader of the staff and his presence looms large.

He went 14-9 with a 2.28 ERA in 2022.

The Marlins and Mets will play again on Tuesday night at loanDepot park. First pitch is set for 6:40 p.m. ET as Joey Lucchesi (NYM) pitches against Braxton Garrett.

In the battle of lefties, Lucchesi is 3-0 with a 2.83 ERA while Garrett is 9-6 with a 3.67.
