What a different eight hours makes.

Early on Friday, people were encouraged by the Thursday night rehab performance of Miami Marlins rotation ace Sandy Alcantara. They thought that he may be back before the end of the season and could factor into a possible playoff run.

Now, on Friday afternoon, the news is grim. Alcantara is still experiencing forearm problems and will undoubtedly be shut down while the team tries to figure it out.

Per Jordan McPherson of the Miami Herald:

Sandy Alcantara felt forearm tightness after his start with Triple A Jacksonville last night, per the #Marlins. He’s traveling back to Miami today and will be at the ballpark tomorrow.

Alcantara had been put on the injured list with a UCL sprain and now fans are fearing the worst about his future. Often times, "UCL sprain," and "forearm tightness" are precursors to the more serious Tommy John surgery.

Alcantara is 7-12 this year with a 4.14 ERA. He's struck out 151 batters this season and despite his lackluster overall numbers, he's the leader of the staff and won the Cy Young award in 2022. His presence would have been huge for a young team looking to close out the regular season on a positive note and looking to make the playoffs for the first time since 2020.

The Marlins enter play on Friday at 0.5 games back of the third and final wild card spot in the National League and will take on the Milwaukee Brewers on Friday night.

First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 p.m. ET.
