Miami Marlins right fielder Jesús Sánchez appeared to hurt his leg running out a ground ball against the Tampa Bay Rays on Wednesday. Sánchez was helped off the field and left the game in the second inning.

Outfielder Garrett Hampson replaced Sánchez in the lineup.

At the time Sánchez went down, the game was scoreless. The Marlins wound up scoring two runs later that inning, though, and they were on top 7-1 by the end of the game.

Sánchez is in the midst of his first full season in the majors, as he spent roughly a third of his time in AAA over the past two years. The 25-year-old outfielder from the Dominican Republic is batting .258 with a .796 OPS in 2023.

Among Marlins hitters, Sánchez ranks No. 4 with 10 home runs, No. 4 with 16 doubles, No. 5 with 35 RBI and No. 4 with a 1.1 WAR so far this season. Sánchez boasts the second-highest slugging percentage on the team, and the 496-foot homer he hit in May 2022 was the fifth-longest of the Statcast era.

Sánchez started his professional career with the Rays, signing with Tampa Bay as a 16-year-old international free agent in 2014. The Rays eventually traded him and pitcher Ryne Stanek to the Marlins in exchange for pitchers Nick Anderson and Trevor Richards at the 2019 trade deadline.

Miami dropped game one of its series against Tampa Bay on Tuesday, although it salvaged the split with a win on Wednesday.

The Marlins are currently 55-48, which puts them 0.5 games back of the third NL Wild Card spot. However, they are just 2-9 since the All-Star break. Sánchez was hitting .276 with an .812 OPS in that span prior to his injury Wednesday.
