Miami Marlins Outfielder Avisaíl García Set to Re-Start Rehab Assignment After Setback

In this story:
Miami Marlins outfielder Avisaíl García will begin his rehab assignment with Double-A Pensacola on Tuesday night, MLB.com's Christina De Nicola has reported.
García will start at designated hitter and get three at-bats, per De Nicola.
The 32-year-old from Venezuela has been on the 10-day injured list with left back tightness since May 2. García started a rehab assignment with Triple-A Jacksonville on May 29, getting four games in before suffering a setback on June 3.
García last played for the Marlins on April 28, when he went 1-for-3 with a strikeout and hit-by-pitch against the Chicago Cubs.
So far this season, García is hitting just .188 with three home runs, eight RBI and a .577 OPS in 22 games. However, he did hit .250 with a .727 OPS in his last 10 games before going down with his back injury, in addition to closing things out on a four-game hitting streak.
García is in the second year of a four-year, $53 million contract. The veteran is the second-highest paid player on Miami's payroll this season, and he has the highest guaranteed salary on the team for 2024.
Before arriving in Miami, García had stints of varying success with the Chicago White Sox, Tampa Bay Rays and Milwaukee Brewers. García was even an All-Star with the White Sox in 2017, and he slugged 29 home runs with 86 RBI with the Brewers in 2021.
García is hitting .218 with a .581 OPS as a member of the Marlins, having only hit 11 home runs in 120 games. García owned a 3.68 strikeout-to-walk ratio through his first 10 seasons in the majors, but that number has climbed to 6.6 since he joined the Marlins.
Miami is currently off to its best start in franchise history, sitting at 53-43 in mid-July. The Marlins were 14-13 when García went to the injured list.
Manager Skip Schumaker told reporters he did not have a timetable for García's return to the majors, but that it would certainly take him more than one or two games in the minors before he was ready to rejoin the team.
The Marlins' next game is on the road against the St. Louis Cardinals on Tuesday night at 7:45 p.m.
