The New York Mets got a major sigh of relief on Wednesday night as Pete Alonso was given a good injury report.

Alonso exited the game after being hit by a pitch against the Atlanta Braves and the Mets put this information out on social media:

Pete Alonso was removed from tonight's game after being hit in the wrist. X-rays were negative. He has been diagnosed with a left wrist contusion and is considered day to day.

That's excellent news for the Mets, who can ill-afford to lose Alonso for any real stretch of time. Entering play on Wednesday, he led baseball in home runs with 22 and was tied for fourth in RBIs with 49.

In this game, Alonso was 0-0 with the hit by pitch. For the season, he's hitting .231 with the 22 homers and 49 RBIs. He's also posted a .872 OPS in 229 at-bats.

For his career, he's a .258 hitter with 168 homers and 429 RBI. Alonso was a second-round pick out of the University of Florida and won the Rookie of the Year award in the National League in 2019. He's also been an All-Star and is vying to join other National League stars in Seattle this summer.

At the time of this posting, the Mets lead the Braves, 4-1, in the top of the fifth inning. If the Mets win this game, they'll move to 31-31 while a loss would drop the Braves to 36-25.

The two teams will play again on Thursday at 7:20 p.m. ET.
