The New York Yankees, decimated by injuries, are getting closer to getting back starting pitcher Luis Severino.

The burly right-hander will make his season debut at Triple-A this Wednesday or Thursday. He'll need at least two rehab starts before coming back to the Bronx, so if all goes well, he could be back before the end of the month.

He's been out with a lat strain suffered in spring training.

His return would be a big boon to a staff that hasn't yet seen big free agent acquisition Carlos Rodon because of injury. The Yankees are also out Frankie Montas, acquired last year at the trade deadline, possibly for the season.

In the bullpen, the Yankees have injured relievers Tommy Kahnle and Lou Trivino as well. Trivino is out for the season after getting Tommy John surgery.

On the position player front, the team has dealt with injuries to Aaron Judge, Giancarlo Stanton and Josh Donaldson -- though Judge is likely to return early this week.

The Yankees are currently in last place in the hyper-competitive American League East. They are 18-17 and 10.0 games back of the first-place Rays.

For his career, Severino is 50-29 with a 3.39 ERA. He made the American League all-star team in both 2017 and 2018. He's dealt with injuries frequently in his career. He made just three starts in 2019, missed all of 2020, made four appearances in 2021 and started just 19 games in 2022.

The Yankees are hosting the Athletics tonight at 7:05 p.m. ET.
