After being hit by a pitch on Monday night, San Diego Padres star Manny Machado got some bad news on his ailing hand.

Padres reporter AJ Cassavell put the information out on Twitter:

Manny Machado has a small fracture on his hand from the HBP on Monday, Bob Melvin says. It’s unclear whether he’ll require an IL stint. Padres will know more Friday. Brutal timing for a team in search of offense.

It's good news that he doesn't immediately get put on the injured list, but anytime you hear "fracture" involving your star player, that's certainly something that raises your antenna's up, especially as the Boston Red Sox come to town over the weekend.

Machado is hitting just .231 with five homers and 19 RBI but his presence being removed from the Padres lineup would certainly be noticeable. He's added two steals as well.

For his career, Machado is a .280 hitter with 288 homers and 872 RBI. He's spent time with the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers, in addition to the Padres.

He is a six-time All-Star and a two-time Gold Glove winner.

In addition to Machado's slow start, the Padres themselves have started slow. They are currently 20-24 and just lost two straight games to the hapless Royals. They are in fourth place in the National League West and are currently eight games back of the Dodgers.

They have lost eight of their last 10.

They'll be off on Thursday before hosting the Red Sox on Friday night. First pitch is 9:40 p.m. ET.
