Seattle Mariners Place Promising Rookie on Injured List But Provide Positive Update

The Seattle Mariners are calling up top pitching prospect Emerson Hancock because rookie Bryan Woo is headed to the injured list.

Earlier on Tuesday, we heard that the Seattle Mariners were calling up highly-touted prospect Emerson Hancock.

That seemed like great news, as Hancock is another exciting prospect to debut for the M's this season. But now, it comes against this nerve-wracking backdrop: Rookie Bryan Woo has been placed on the injured list.

The following update comes from the Rotowire fantasy baseball portal:

Seattle placed Woo on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with right forearm inflammation.

ANALYSIS
The severity of the issue is unclear, but Woo will miss at least a couple of turns through the rotation. The 23-year-old right-hander has turned in a 4.75 ERA, 1.24 WHIP and 60:17 K:BB in his first 11 major-league starts covering 55 innings. Emerson Hancock is likely to be called up from Double-A Arkansas to replace Woo in the rotation on Wednesday versus the Padres.

If you're looking for a positive in the whole thing, there's what Mariners GM Justin Hollander said on Tuesday after the initial report came out.

Per Daniel Kramer of MLB.com:

There are “no real concerns” about Bryan Woo’s right forearm inflammation, per Mariners GM Justin Hollander. The IL stint was out of “an abundance of caution.” He felt more sore than usual coming out of his start on Thursday, which led to today’s move.

The Mariners could also be using this as a way to manage Woo's innings. The rookie has thrown 99 total innings this season after throwing just 57 last year. The team said they wanted to be conservative with him.

The Mariners are taking on the Padres on Tuesday night.
