Reliever Austin Voth Returning to Baltimore Orioles After 2 Months on Injured List

Austin Voth hasn't taken the mound for the Baltimore Orioles since June, but the veteran finally rejoined the bullpen with his elbow injury behind him.

The Baltimore Orioles have reinstated right-handed pitcher Austin Voth from the 60-day injured list, the team announced Wednesday.

To make room for Voth on the active roster, the Orioles optioned right-hander Mike Baumann to Triple-A Norfolk. Baltimore also transferred left-handed pitcher Keegan Akin to the 60-day injured list with lower back discomfort, meaning he won't be eligible to return until Monday.

Baumann was 9-1 with a 3.82 ERA in 56 appearances this season, but 0-1 with a 7.71 ERA, .333 batting average against, 1.025 OPS against and a blown save since Aug. 8.

As for Voth, he suffered an elbow injury over two months ago and hasn't taken the mound for the Orioles since June 13 against the Toronto Blue Jays.

Voth was 1-2 with a 4.94 ERA, 1.581 WHIP and 9.0 strikeouts per nine innings when he went down.

A shaky start to the season and an equally shaky last few weeks leading up to his injury ballooned Voth's stats, while his stretch in the middle of the spring was among the most dominant in the American League. In his 12 outings from April 16 to May 21, Voth had a 1.84 ERA, 0.955 WHIP, 10.4 strikeouts per nine innings, a .189 batting average against and a .493 OPS against.

Voth started a rehab assignment with the Florida Complex League Orioles on July 20, progressing to Double-A Bowie on July 23 and Triple-A Norfolk on July 27. Across a combined eight appearances, Voth put up a 3.97 ERA, 1.500 WHIP and 12.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

Baltimore picked Voth up off waivers from the Washington Nationals on June 7, 2022. Although he had transitioned into a relief role after five years in DC, the Orioles used Voth as a starter and rode his 3.04 ERA to a 12-7 record when he pitched.

Voth and the Orioles will try to even up their series against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. First pitch from Camden Yards is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. ET.
