Chicago White Sox Recall Rookies, DFA Veteran to Shake Up Pitching Staff

In this story:
The Chicago White Sox announced a slew of roster moves ahead of their series finale against the Seattle Mariners on Wednesday.
The White Sox designated right-handed pitcher Brent Honeywell Jr. for assignment, just two weeks after picking him up on waivers from the San Diego Padres. The team has recalled right-handed pitcher Edgar Navarro and left-handed pitcher Sammy Peralta from Triple-A Charlotte.
To make room for both rookie hurlers, the White Sox also had to option infielder Zach Remillard to Triple-A Charlotte.
Prior to today’s series finale vs. Seattle, the #WhiteSox made the following four roster moves:
— Chicago White Sox (@whitesox) August 23, 2023
- Optioned INF Zach Remillard to Class AAA Charlotte;
- Designated RHP Brent Honeywell for assignment;
- Recalled RHP Edgar Navarro and LHP Sammy Peralta from Charlotte.
Honeywell, who made his MLB debut as an opener with the Tampa Bay Rays in 2021, signed with the Padres as a free agent in January. San Diego designated Honeywell for assignment on Aug. 2 after he went 2-4 with a 4.05 ERA, 1.371 WHIP and 0.2 WAR in 36 appearances.
In four games as a member of the White Sox, Honeywell posted an 11.12 ERA, 2.118 WHIP and -0.2 WAR. Honeywell allowed three earned runs against the Colorado Rockies on Friday, then he gave up four against the Mariners on Monday.
Navarro and Peralta made their MLB debuts earlier this year, and both turned 25 years old midway through the season.
Peralta reached the majors first, allowing two earned runs in extra innings on May 4 before getting sent right back down to the farm. The southpaw temporarily returned to Chicago in the summer, stringing together four-straight scoreless outings in late July and early August.
In 112 minor league appearances, Peralta is 14-12 with a 3.96 ERA, 1.220 WHIP and 10.9 strikeouts per nine innings for his career.
Nevarro was also on the active roster as July turned into August, tossing a scoreless inning in his debut before giving up two earned in a blowout loss to the Texas Rangers a few days later.
The right-hander owns a 15-14 record, 5.14 ERA, 1.573 WHIP and 9.6 strikeouts per nine innings across 168 career outings in the minors.
Remillard made his own MLB debut this year at age 29, batting .265 with a .654 OPS in 40 games. Lenyn Sosa has emerged as the team's starting second baseman this week, though, making Remillard expendable.
First pitch for the White Sox's game against the Mariners on Wednesday is scheduled for 2:10 p.m.
Chicago boasts the fourth-worst record in baseball at 49-77, and it just cleaned out its front office on Tuesday.
