The Cleveland Guardians have designated former starting pitcher Zach Plesac for assignment, per reports.

Robert Murray of Fansided had the report on Twitter.

It's quite a fall for Plesac, who opened the season in the starting rotation for Cleveland. The 28-year-old went 1-1 with a 7.59 ERA in five starts.

He's been a huge part of the Guardians rotation since making his big league debut in 2019, so that makes his downfall even more surprising.

He's started more than 21 games each of the last three full seasons, and made eight starts in the pandemic season. He won 10 games in 2021 and had an ERA of 2.28 in 2020.

For his career, he's 26-27 with a 4.20 ERA.

The Guardians sent him to Triple-A after his early season struggles and things didn't get better. He went 1-3 with a 7.56 ERA in five starts there.

The team will now have seven days to trade him, release him, or outright him to the minors. He'd have to agree to that, so it seems likely that he'll become a free agent.

I personally would imagine that some team will take a chance on him, but don't expect it to be a contending team.

The Guardians did get some good news on the pitching front this week. Young ace Triston McKenzie is recovered from injury and will make his season debut on Sunday against the Twins.

Cleveland is currently 26-32 and 4.5 games back of the Twins in the American Leage Central. The Guardians are 5-5 in their last 10 games.
