Javy Baez's Lineup Status For Game 1 of Tigers-Mets Doubleheader

As the Detroit Tigers and New York Mets get set to play a doubleheader on Thursday, Tigers' shortstop Javy Baez is sitting in Game 1.

Detroit Tigers' shortstop Javier Baez is out of the starting lineup for Game 1 of the doubleheader between the Tigers and New York Mets on Thursday.

You can view the lineup here, which features Zack McKinstry at shortstop and in the nine-hole.

Though it's not surprising to see a player sit at least one game of a doubleheader, it's the continuation of a disappointing start for the Tigers' veteran. Baez is hitting just .188 in the early going with no home runs. He's also struck out six times while collecting no walks.

Since arriving in Detroit before the 2022 season, Baez is a paltry .229 hitter who owns just a .271 on-base percentage. Though he made changes to his offseason program with the hope of getting back to his former self, it hasn't happened yet. He signed a six-year deal in Detroit before the 2022 season.

An 11-year veteran now, Baez has played for the Chicago Cubs, New York Mets and Tigers. He helped the Cubs win the 2016 World Series and led the National League in RBI (111) back in 2018. He was a two-time All-Star with Chicago as well, and he won a Gold Glove in the COVID-shortened 2020 season. He finished second in the MVP voting in 2018.

The Tigers and Mets will play Game 1 of the doubleheader at 12:10 p.m. ET. Casey Mize will start for Detroit while Adrian Houser makes his first start for the Mets.

The second game is scheduled for immediately following and Baez should be back in the lineup for that one.
