The New Details on Why Kim Ng Left the Miami Marlins

Jeff Passan of ESPN has more on the report that Kim Ng has stepped aside as general manager of the Miami Marlins.

It was reported earlier on Monday that Kim Ng had stepped aside as general manager of the Miami Marlins.

Then, by midday Monday, we had a report based on a conversation between Ng and Tyler Kepner of the New York Times.

Now, as of Monday afternoon, there's a new report with further details from Jeff Passan of ESPN:

The Miami Marlins wanted to hire a president of baseball operations over general manager Kim Ng, leading to her departure from the organization, sources told ESPN. When reached, Ng declined comment. But sources said she would've been the No. 2 after constructing a playoff team.

Passan also wrote a full story on the situation, which can be read here.

The Marlins made the playoffs this year, capturing a wild card in the National League before being swept by the Philadelphia Phillies. They won 84 games and are generally regarded as an organization on the rise. They also made the playoffs during the COVID 2020 season.

It's not known yet what Ng's plans will be moving forward. Does she want to go to another organization now? The Red Sox, for instance, are still looking for a baseball ops leader. Does she want time off? Does she want to move up to a different front office perch? We will have to wait and see.

Per MLBTradeRumors:

Ng, now 54, was hired to be the general manager of the Marlins in November of 2020, which was trailblazing on multiple fronts. Ng was the first woman to be a general manager for a men’s team in any of the four major North American sports and the first Asian-American GM in the history of Major League Baseball.
