Former American League Rookie of the Year Reportedly Signs Deal with Boston Red Sox

The Boston Red Sox have signed former American League Rookie of the Year Michael Fulmer to a contract, though he's going to miss 2024 with Tommy John surgery.

The Boston Red Sox have reportedly come to terms with reliever Michael Fulmer.

Per Mike Mayer of Metsmerized Online:

Reliever Michael Fulmer has signed a deal with the Boston Red Sox.

Considering that Fulmer underwent elbow surgery at the end of 2023 and is out for the entirety of 2024, it would stand to reason that this is a multi-year deal. If it's a two-year pact, then Fulmer can rehab under Boston's eye for 2024, come back for 2025, and then rebuild value heading into free agency in 2026.

The 30-year-old Oklahoma native has pitched in parts of seven big league seasons with the Detroit Tigers, Minnesota Twins and Chicago Cubs. He was the American League Rookie of the Year with Detroit in 2016 and earned an All-Star nod in 2017.

Fulmer was a starter for the first four seasons of his career but transitioned to a bullpen role in 2021. He made 52 appearances in 2021, 67 in 2022 and 58 this past season.

Lifetime, he's 37-50 with a 3.94 ERA. Fulmer had double-digit wins in both 2016 and 2017.

As for the Red Sox, contract terms aren't known at this time, but it seems like a worthy gamble, especially as guys like Kenley Jansen and Chris Martin come off the books at the end of this season. The bullpen will need to rebuilt in the offseason and new Baseball Ops man Craig Breslow has gotten an early start on that.

The Red Sox are coming off a season in which they finished last in the American League East.
