Iowa Football Fan Pays Steep Price to Send a Message at Game 3 of the World Series

An Iowa Hawkeyes fan went viral for holding up a sign behind home plate during Game 3 of the World Series, complaining about a controversial call that led to a loss.

The Texas Rangers and Arizona Diamondbacks are currently taking center stage at the World Series, but one Iowa Hawkeyes fan tried to make the most of his time in the spotlight during Game 3.

A man wearing a yellow Iowa t-shirt was seated right behind home plate Monday night in Phoenix. He was holding a small sign that read "It wasn't a fair catch," referencing a controversial call that cost the Hawkeyes a win over Minnesota on Oct. 21.

The man was in a batter's box suite at Chase Field, which meant he likely spent thousands of dollars to send his message with the entire country watching.

The college football world was up in arms over the call Iowas fan are still complaining about over than a week later. The Hawkeyes appeared to return a punt for a go-ahead touchdown with just over a minute left, only for the referees to call an invalid fair catch while reviewing whether or not Cooper DeJean stepped out of bounds.

Iowa wound up throwing an interception and losing, and they fell out of the AP Top 25 as a result. At 6-2, the Hawkeyes still control their own destiny in the Big Ten West, but with a smaller margin of error due to their clutch special teams score getting called back.

If the Iowa fan at Chase Field on Monday was also a Diamondbacks fan, he likely isn't feeling much better about his teams following Game 3. The Rangers won 3-1 to go up 2-1 in the series.
