Minnesota Twins Trade Versatile Roster Piece to Miami Marlins For Bullpen Help

One day after losing his arbitration hearing with the Minnesota Twins, versatile player Nick Gordon has been traded to the Miami Marlins for reliever Steven Okert.

On Saturday, versatile player Nick Gordon lost his arbitration hearing with the Minnesota Twins.

On Sunday, Gordon was traded to the Miami Marlins for reliever Steven Okert.

Per Marlins' reporter Craig Mish:

The Miami Marlins are acquiring outfielder/infielder Nick Gordon via trade with the Minnesota Twins per source. Miami is sending relief pitcher Steven Okert to the Twins in return.

The 28-year-old Gordon is the son of former closer Tom "Flash" Gordon and the brother of former Marlins star Dee Strange-Gordon. He's appeared in games at the big league level in each of the last three years after debuting in 2021. He played in a career-high 136 games in 2022 but played in just 34 last season because of injury.

Gordon is a career .250 hitter and hit .272 in a breakout 2022 season but only hit .176 in 2023. He's got 15 career home runs and 16 career stolen bases and is capable of playing infield and outfield both. It's unclear exactly how he'll fit in with the Marlins, but they appear to have openings where Gordon may be able to secure some playing time at the big league level.

As for Okert, he's the latest addition to the Twins bullpen after the team recently traded for Justin Topa. The 32-year-old California native is a six-year major league veteran who has played for the San Francisco Giants and Marlins. Lifetime, he's 12-9 with a 3.70 ERA. He appeared in a career-high 64 games last season for Miami.

The Twins won the American League Central a season ago.
