Veteran Pitcher Mike Clevinger Clears Waivers, Will Remain With Chicago White Sox

In this story:
Veteran starting pitcher Mike Clevinger cleared waivers Thursday and will return to the Chicago White Sox, according to ESPN's Jesse Rogers.
The White Sox placed Clevinger on waivers Tuesday.
Per Rogers, the right-hander was seen as too pricey for other teams to pick up with just a month left in the regular season. Clevinger signed a one-year, $8 million contract with the White Sox in November and is still due $1.42 million from that deal. He also holds a $12 million mutual option for 2024 with a $4 million buyout, bringing Clevinger's total remaining guaranteed money to $5.42 million.
Clevinger is 6-6 with a 3.32 ERA and 1.229 WHIP in 18 starts this season.
Chicago was hoping to get off the 32-year-old's contract regardless of his production, though, as the team sits well out of playoff contention at 53-81.
Back in January, MLB placed Clevinger under investigation for allegations of domestic violence and child abuse against his 10-month-old daughter and her mother. The league determined in March that he would not face discipline.
Clevinger started his career as part of a stacked Cleveland Indians rotation that made it to the World Series in 2016. The Indians sent Clevinger to the San Diego Padres as part of a blockbuster trade in 2020.
After signing an extension with the Padres at the end of the season, Clevinger underwent Tommy John surgery and missed the entire 2021 campaign. He returned to the mound in 2022, and capped off the relative bounceback year by posting a 23.63 ERA in two postseason starts as San Diego made it all the way to the NLCS.
Clevinger is 57-36 with a 3.38 ERA, 1.193 WHIP and 9.3 strikeouts per nine innings over the course of his career.
