The last time Cejudo tasted victory in the cage was when he TKO’d Dominick Cruz to defend his Bantamweight title. That was at UFC 249 all the way back on May 9th, 2020. He then retired on a six-fight winning streak, at peace with his run as a two-division champ.

On Saturday, he will be taking on a worthy champion with an impressive winning streak of his own. Aljamain Sterling has been hot, rattling off eight consecutive victories and facing off with the best that Bantamweight has to offer.

Yet, at his UFC 288 press conference “Triple C” was looking ahead to bigger, and more famous, opponents.

“First of all I’m going to stop [Aljamain Sterling] under three, and I promise you that. And then after that I’m going after Sean O’Malley, and then I’m going after Alexander Volkanovski.”

“Sugar” Sean O’Malley is the number one ranked contender in the division and has said his next fight will be for the title. He also comes with the popularity necessary to keep Cejudo from stepping away again.

If Cejudo were to move up to Featherweight to take on Alexander Volkanovski, it would be a mega fight. Volkanovski has also shown he is interested in taking new challenges, after moving up a weight class to take on Islam Makhachev.

This could be a fairy tale ending for Cejudo, who would likely cement himself as one of the greatest UFC Fighters of all time if he pulls it off. The only problem is, he has a very dangerous Aljamain Sterling standing in his way.
