Former Newbury Park shortstop Shay Whitcomb was selected by the Houston Astros with the final pick in the 2020 MLB Draft – 160th overall, fifth round.

Whitcomb finished his college career with a batting average of .315 for UC San Diego. As a junior in 2020, he was batting .333 before the season was shortened. Whitcomb is projected by some scouts best used as a second baseman going forward.
