The Los Angeles City Section announced on Tuesday that the regular seasons for boys and girls basketball and soccer have been extended by one week. As a result, the playoffs will not start until the week of Feb. 14, instead of the week of Feb. 7, and will take place throughout the course of two weeks instead of three. Playoff seeding will take place on Feb. 12-13, and the championships will take place on Feb. 25-26 as planned.

In the press release, the City Section said that the decision was made to "provide [its] member schools more time to re-schedule postponed league contests or the possibility of having to re-schedule future contests due to COVID and the recent pause in LAUSD athletics." The news comes on the heels of a one-week pause the City Section took from athletic contests last week as a response to the winter COVID-19 surge. Play resumed as planned on Saturday.

The City Section added in the release that specific dates for those playoff contests "will be shared at another time", and "girls water polo and wrestling will be addressed in the near future."
