SBLive’s San Diego Section Baseball Top 10: No. 1 La Costa Canyon, No. 2 Torrey Pines set for three-game series

La Costa Canyon and Torrey Pines will fight for a league title this week while also jostling for San Diego Section playoff seeding.

No. 1 La Costa Canyon and No. 2 Torrey Pines will meet for a three-game series this week that is likely to decide the North County Coastal League race. The longtime rivals both finished last season on a high note with La Costa Canyon capturing the San Diego Section Open Division title and Torrey Pines capturing the Southern California Division 2 Regional title.

In their last 48 matchups dating back to the 2005 season, La Costa Canyon holds a 24-23 edge in the rivalry with one game in 2012 ending in a tie.

SAN DIEGO SECTION TOP 10 BASEBALL RANKINGS

1. La Costa Canyon (18-4)

The Mavericks took two of three games from Carlsbad, shutting out the Lancers in 2-0 and 4-0. Senior Gabe Camacho tossed a three-hitter in Saturday's win over Carlsbad at Petco Park.

2. Torrey Pines (17-4)

Torrey Pines took the final two games from Poway in last week's Coastal League series. The Falcons will play three games with top-ranked La Costa Canyon this week. Both teams enter in a tie for the league standings.

3. Eastlake (18-3)

Eastlake beat Bonita Vista 7-0 on Wednesday before falling to the Barons 2-1 in eight innings during their rematch on Friday. The Titans will play Olympian, Montgomery and Scripps Ranch this week.

4. Montgomery (17-2)

Montgomery had their 6-0 lead erased against Christian on Monday, falling 10-9 to the Patriots. They bounced back with two shutout wins against Olympian to pull even with Eastlake in the league standings.

5. Carlsbad (16-7)

Carlsbad shutout top-ranked La Costa Canyon on Wednesday but dropped the first and last games of the series. The Lancers will play a combined five games against San Marcos and Poway over the next two weeks.

6. Rancho Bernardo (14-7)

The Broncos scored 34 runs in last week's series against San Marcos but went 2-1 and were walked off by the Knights in Friday's finale. A three-game series with rival Poway is set for this week.

7. Granite Hills (11-6)

The Eagles lost to Santana 4-1 and beat the Sultans 5-1 last week. They'll play three league games this week trying to close the gap in the league standings.

8. La Jolla Country Day (14-8)

La Jolla Country Day took the first two games from Maranatha Christian in last week's series before falling to the Eagles 5-2 on Thursday at Petco Park. They hold a three-game lead in the Coastal League standings with six games left to play.

9. Santana (13-7)

Santana split their two games with Granite Hills last week in the Grossmont Hills League. The Sultans hold a two-game lead in the standings with four games left to play.

10. Cathedral Catholic (14-8)

The Dons bounced back last week by taking two of three low-scoring games from Point Loma, 1-0 and 2-1. They'll play non-league games against Scripps Ranch and Bonita Vista this week before a three-game showdown against rival St. Augustine next week.
