Watch slideshow of life and times of legendary Dan "Coach Shag" Shaughnessy (1936-2023)

If an artist could paint an image, if Hollywood could offer an actor, if a writer could create a character — all of a football coach — it would look a lot like Dan Shaughnessy.
Barrel-chested, square-jawed, strong, firm, convicted, loud, impassioned — Shaughnessy displayed it all over 59 years of coaching, 45 as head coach at Salesian-Richmond, St. Mary's-Berkeley and Albany high schools in the San Francisco Bay Area.
It wasn't just a display, however, it was who he was.
He died June 21 at the age of 87 due to heart failure. SEE TRIBUTE STORY
See close to 50 images offered by the gracious Shaughnessy family at the top of this page of the man known to most as "Shag," or "Coach Shag," who left behind a legacy of faith, family and football.
