Look: De La Salle coach Justin Alumbaugh interview: 'I wanted to see hor tough we were'
De La Salle football coach Justin Alumbaugh couldn't wait for his team to play Clovis North on Friday night.
The Broncos not only brought an undefeated record into the CIF Northern California Division I-AA championship game but a physical brand of football that Alumbaugh relishes. He was an offensive lineman and linebacker himself in the 1990s at De La Salle.
"I wanted to see how tough we were," he said. "I wanted to put our kids in a grinder. They've got a big line and big backs. They came at us. And we came at them."
In what he called "definitely our best game of the year," the Spartans prevailed 41-0 in a shocking score considering how strong and well coached the Broncos are.
In his 11th season, sporting a nifty 124-18 record with 10 North Coast, nine regional and two state championships, Alumbaugh talked about peaking at the right time, the team's slow start and the inspiring play of a couple key players, defensive lineman Chris Biller and running back Derrick Blanche Jr.
I wanted to see a real physical game, especially coming off a bye," Alumbaugh said. "Let's get after it. Let's play an old-school football game. I wanted to see our kids play with a lot of physicality and energy and they did."
