San Ramon Valley's girls fought and fought and fought to get even with fast-starting Cardinal Newman. They not only caught up early in the fourth quarter, but they also passed the Cardinals.

That's when Newman went back inside on its inside-out attack to post a terrific 61-55 North Coast Section Open Division championship victory Saturday at Dublin High School.

It was the first Open Division title for the Cardinals, who not only won their 26th straight game but snapped San Ramon Valley's 26-game win streak. This was definitely a heavyweight battle.

Both teams will enter next week's CIF Northern California Open Division with identical 28-2 records.

The intensity and quality of action, plus the jubilation of winning and agony of defeat are revealed in these terrific photos shot by Dennis Lee.
