The 2021-22 season will be one to remember for the Martin County boys basketball program as they won their first FHSAA state championship in 43 years.
Last week Martin County head coach John Leon was named the 2021-22 Florida High School Boys Basketball Coach of the Year.
"It is truly a blessing to receive this prestigious award," Leon said. "The kids pushed me to become a better coach and an even better person."
Martin County defeated Wharton (Tampa) 52-47 in the semifinals, followed by a 53-49 win over Ponte Vedra to claim the Class 6A state title.
The other nominees for the award were Dr. Phillips head coach Ben Witherspoon, Lake Highland Prep’s Ben Fratrik, Florida High’s Charlie Ward and Calvary Christian Academy’s Cilk McSweeney.
“I’d like to give a huge shout out to the community for their immense support of our program throughout the season as well,” Leon said.
