VOTE: Who will be Hillsborough County’s top football team in 2022?

TAMPA, FLORIDA- One of the most heavily anticipated seasons of high school football is just about upon us with practices starting on Monday (August 1st) and teams itching to get back together fully for practices. From 7-on-7’s to weight-room sessions and training on footwork for skill players to the slew of transfers going around, there’s been a ton to talk about when it comes down to Hillsborough County football.
There are a myriad of teams that are viable state championship contenders, with some just on the outside looking in. Who’s got the best squad in Hillsborough County? We are putting it to a vote so you can decide. Please read our brief analysis of the nine teams we feel warrant the most consideration and then scroll down to the poll at the bottom of the article and cast your vote.
Jesuit: The 2021 Class 6A state champions bring back quarterback Luke Knight, running back Joquez Smith (Temple commit), linebacker Troy Bowles (Georgia commit) and a slew of others. Tigers will be in the hunt.
Tampa Bay Tech: Titans finished as the state runner-ups in Class 7A last season and Tampa Bay Tech returns quarterback Xavione Washington and gets a key transfer in Rod Gainey from IMG Academy to remain a state title contender.
Wharton: If there’s one team that seems to have dramatically gotten better based on their off-season, it’s the Wildcats. With IMG Academy transfer Stacy Gage and a few others, Wharton is now the team to talk about.
Armwood: Can’t ever count out the Hawks under Evan Davis. Armwood has another talented team coming up and will be a competitive bunch up against anyone.

Newsome: The Wolves are just always a team that gets very little fanfare but brings one of the top teams in Hillsborough County. We believe 2022 should be no different for the team from Lithia.
Berkeley Prep: Yes, the Buccaneers lost their two-headed duo in the backfield from last season but quarterback Troy Reader and defensive end Keon Keeley are back in the fold.

Sumner: The Stingrays were the surprise team of 2021 by winning a district championship and a playoff return should be in the books for Sumner. Keep an eye out for this program.
Plant: Hank Brown has the Panthers trending back to their championship-type ways, but might be a couple years removed from being fully back in the talk of state titles.
Tampa Catholic: Linebacker Lewis Carter (Oklahoma commit) leads a very talented defensive group for the Crusaders. Expect Tampa Catholic to be in contention for a deep playoff run this fall.
