Back in 1997, it would be a first when it came to winning state championships for multiple schools. Unknowingly at the time, it would remain their only state titles to this very day.
Chiefland and Taylor County both claimed state championship victories 26 years ago, but which both programs look back on the year as the best in school history.
The Indians soundly defeated the Lafayette Hornets 49-28 for the Class 2A state championship at Ben Hill Griffin Stadium in Gainesville. Chiefland is coming off a solid campaign in Class 1R and will be a contender for a state crown this fall.
For the Bulldogs, it was a 14-6 win over Clewiston for the Class 3A state title. Taylor County is coming off an up and down 4-6 campaign in which they competed well against teams like Blountstown, Maclay and Wakulla.
