Davon Mitchell, 5-star tight end, commits to Oklahoma Sooners, reclassifies into 2024 class
Saturday proved to be a big day for Los Alamitos (California) five-star tight end Davon Mitchell, the nation's No. 1 tight end.
The 6-foot-5, 245-pound jumbo pass-catcher not only announced his commitment to Oklahoma over Alabama and Miami, but he also reclassified from 2025 into 2024 and announced plans to enroll in Norman in January.
"I'm committing to Oklahoma," he said. "The coaching staff has been recruiting me for a long time. I fell in love with the staff. I fell in love with Oklahoma when I was younger. I was a fan. That's one of the biggest things that comes with it."
While Mitchell felt comfortable with all three finalists - he had visited each at least three times - Oklahoma simply checked every box for him,
"Everything stands out," he said. "They've got a great head coach, Coach V [Venables]. When he was at Clemson he did pretty well. They've got a great tight end coach and a great (offensive coordinator). I want to be around somebody who has done it before and is going to get me to the next level."
"The coaching staff is cool, the players are cool - everything."
Mitchell entered the day rated as the nation's No. 1 tight end by Rivals and ESPN and the No. 2 tight end by On3 and 247Sports in the 2025 class.
But there will need to be some reshuffling as he's now a 2024 prospect.
"I'm excited to get in there, learn all the plays and hopefully get on the field next year," he said. "I'm graduating in December."
Part of Mitchell's push to arrive in Norman early is the belief that the offense will be in very good hands for the next several years.
"They've got a great quarterback room going on right now," he said.
Entering the day, Oklahoma's recruiting class was ranked No. 38 nationally with 11 pledges, but its "average rating per commit" (90.02) was more in line with a top-15 class.
In the 2023 recruiting cycle, no program in the top-15 nationally finished with an "average rating per commit" in the 90s.
